Global Pharmaceutical Company
We partnered with a large, publicly traded pharmaceutical company to build a custom internal planning tool that helps coordinate their worldwide operations. The interactive timeline application synchronizes hundreds of activities across nearly a dozen divisions—guiding new medicines through development, testing, regulatory approval, and market launch.
A global pharmaceutical company developing and manufacturing medicines that reach patients worldwide. With operations spanning multiple continents and regulatory environments, coordinating the complex process of bringing a new drug to market requires precise planning across many specialized teams.
Developing a new medicine isn't a linear process—it's a massively parallel operation involving research teams, clinical trials, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, quality assurance, marketing, and distribution, all working across different countries with different requirements and timelines.
The company needed a way to visualize and coordinate this complexity. Existing project management tools were either too generic (missing pharmaceutical-specific workflows) or too rigid (unable to adapt to the fluid reality of drug development). Teams were working from spreadsheets, slide decks, and disconnected systems—making it difficult to see dependencies, identify bottlenecks, or understand how a delay in one division would ripple across the entire timeline.
They needed a purpose-built tool that could:
Working closely with internal stakeholders and an external designer, we designed and built a custom interactive planning tool:
We used WordPress as a headless CMS to manage the catalog of activities, divisions, and timeline data. This gave the client's team a familiar, easy-to-use admin interface for maintaining the underlying data without requiring developer intervention for routine updates.
The frontend was built using vis-timeline.js—a powerful JavaScript library for creating interactive, zoomable timeline visualizations. Users could:
This wasn't a "build to spec" project. We worked iteratively with several internal stakeholders—each representing different divisions and use cases—to refine the concept, validate the design, and ensure the tool actually solved real problems. An external designer collaborated on the visual design and UX, ensuring the interface was intuitive despite the underlying complexity.
The tool was deployed on the company's internal intranet, making it accessible to authorized stakeholders across the global organization while maintaining security and compliance requirements.
After launch, we provided continued support:
The planning tool transformed how the organization coordinates drug development:
WordPress (Headless CMS), vis-timeline.js, Custom JavaScript, REST API, Responsive/Mobile Design
