Global Pharmaceutical Company
Synchronizing Drug Development Across a Dozen Divisions
We partnered with a large, publicly traded pharmaceutical company to build a custom internal planning tool that helps coordinate their worldwide operations. The interactive timeline application synchronizes hundreds of activities across nearly a dozen divisions—guiding new medicines through development, testing, regulatory approval, and market launch.
About the Client
A global pharmaceutical company developing and manufacturing medicines that reach patients worldwide. With operations spanning multiple continents and regulatory environments, coordinating the complex process of bringing a new drug to market requires precise planning across many specialized teams.
The Full Story
The Challenge
Developing a new medicine isn't a linear process—it's a massively parallel operation involving research teams, clinical trials, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, quality assurance, marketing, and distribution, all working across different countries with different requirements and timelines.
The company needed a way to visualize and coordinate this complexity. Existing project management tools were either too generic (missing pharmaceutical-specific workflows) or too rigid (unable to adapt to the fluid reality of drug development). Teams were working from spreadsheets, slide decks, and disconnected systems—making it difficult to see dependencies, identify bottlenecks, or understand how a delay in one division would ripple across the entire timeline.
They needed a purpose-built tool that could:
- Visualize hundreds of activities across the full drug development lifecycle
- Span nearly a dozen divisions with different responsibilities and timelines
- Show dependencies and relationships between activities across teams
- Be accessible internally to stakeholders across the organization
- Adapt to change as timelines shifted and plans evolved
Our Solution
Working closely with internal stakeholders and an external designer, we designed and built a custom interactive planning tool:
1. Headless WordPress Backend
We used WordPress as a headless CMS to manage the catalog of activities, divisions, and timeline data. This gave the client's team a familiar, easy-to-use admin interface for maintaining the underlying data without requiring developer intervention for routine updates.
2. Custom Interactive Timeline
The frontend was built using vis-timeline.js—a powerful JavaScript library for creating interactive, zoomable timeline visualizations. Users could:
- View the entire drug development process at a glance
- Zoom into specific phases or divisions for detail
- See dependencies and relationships between activities
- Filter by division, phase, or activity type
- Interact with individual items for more information
3. Collaborative Development Process
This wasn't a "build to spec" project. We worked iteratively with several internal stakeholders—each representing different divisions and use cases—to refine the concept, validate the design, and ensure the tool actually solved real problems. An external designer collaborated on the visual design and UX, ensuring the interface was intuitive despite the underlying complexity.
4. Intranet Deployment
The tool was deployed on the company's internal intranet, making it accessible to authorized stakeholders across the global organization while maintaining security and compliance requirements.
5. Ongoing Support & Evolution
After launch, we provided continued support:
- Bug fixes as edge cases emerged from real-world usage
- Feature updates based on user feedback
- Mobile version enabling access for stakeholders on the go
The Results
The planning tool transformed how the organization coordinates drug development:
- Hundreds of activities now visible in a single, interactive view
- Nearly a dozen divisions synchronized on shared timelines
- Cross-functional visibility enabling better dependency management
- Reduced planning friction with intuitive interface and easy data management
- Mobile accessibility for stakeholders across global operations
